Confessions of a coach: why my course didn’t work out as planned

This summer I launched a course.

My attempt was to offer my top 5 most given advice to creative professionals in a budget-friendly course. For creatives who want clients that suit their personality, but cannot (yet) afford a business coach.

So. I was super motivated. I was absorbed by creating it. I was eager to meet my own deadline. I was, to be honest, my own ‘Katrijn’: my own friendly kick in the ass to finish and deliver what I wanted to bring into the world.

But then. It launched. And it failed.
It hardly had any buyers.

So I was left disappointed and felt uncertain. Why didn’t ALL creatives buy this course? Was it not good enough? What did I do wrong?

That’s when I asked for feedback. From the few people who DID follow the course. 🙏🏼

This is for example what Joke, an interior designer, said: Your course made it clear to me who I am as a creator and what makes me unique. This gave me more self-confidence to profile myself. You gave good examples so that the content becomes very practical.

Yess! That’s exactly what I wanted to achieve. So: the ‘students’ told me they absolutely loved the course AND gave some extra input to make it even better. So that strengthened my confidence in the content of the course.

But then. I got a list of feedback from my copywriter. She told me things and asked me questions like:

Why did you launch in the middle of the summer when all creatives are traveling or juggling life&business&pleasure / Why was the course only online for one week / Why didn’t you talk about the course for a longer period of time / Did people even realize there was a course / Social posts are not seen by all followers - let alone they remember what you post / Did people realize how valuable the course is for their life, and that they could take it on their own pace / That it is based on your knowledge as a coach for creative professionals / And most of all: why didn’t you mention the number one argument: budget-friendly + for creatives who cannot afford a business coach (yet).

Whoops. She got me there.

This is what I learned:

  • I love reaching my own goals, but sometimes it’s good to not chase them as swiftly as possible, and be more strategic about them.

  • The course in itself is good and I will make it even better. It has the effect I intended it to have.

  • The failed launch was a very informative process. I learned a lot about marketing and customer psychology & this will improve my future work.

This is what I will do:

  • I have to relaunch the course - it would be such a waste to not give everyone the chance to get it. I will tweak the content a bit first, without a strict time goal for myself. And when it’s ready, I will launch it (so stay tuned!).

  • Most of all: I will tell you A LOT about the course beforehand. So you know exactly what your eurowz will be spent on. The webpage about the course is already re-written and holds a ton of information on what and how. Go check it out and drop me your questions!

  • I will add an extra feature for the first 10 subscribers only: they get a 1-on-1 coaching call with me about a subject they struggle with as a professional creative. 👊🏼
