Robbrecht Desmet
Documentary maker & photographer
Robbrecht (@robbrecht_desmet) wanted to move towards a balance where most of his work is freelance photography.
Why does a documentary filmmaker (who almost has a PhD in the arts) want this? Because he likes the direct, clear nature of these assignments.
We started our trajectory by clearly formulating his goals. With a plan in mind: build a stronger portfolio, meet and/or collaborate with colleagues, approach potential clients, follow up on communication.
His potential clients (with the dream assignments) are present in various fields. Together, we analysed who they might be and how to approach them. Based on that information, I designed a matrix 🤓. I believe that if you visualise things (the dreamed jobs), you come one step closer to actually doing it.
Besides focusing on this new balance, we also worked on his negotiation skills. His growth was defined in terms of pushing his own ideas and negotiating financially. Now he thinks more in the long term and lets go of 'bad' assignments more easily. He experienced this as a great learning curve.
Robbrecht appreciated my openness to his own contribution and attitude. For example, the fact that he 'consciously' wanted to be low profile or not position himself too loudly. He said: "It was nice to get some space for that in the coaching as well.”
Did the trajectory meet his expectations? Yes, it did. He uses what he learned almost daily. When his dissertation is finished, he is looking forward to continuing this dynamic.
