BLOG: Can you delay gratification for long-term success?

TAGS: STRATEGY, PERSONAL GROWTH

Set your own course. There is little benefit in looking behind your shoulders at others. You can sneak a peek, but copying is pointless. Everyone has their own idea of how they want to do things and what they want to achieve.

Determining the outlines of your business is something you do in the beginning. Start-ups usually know very well where they want to go. You have few resources, so you have devised a clever strategy. But after a few years, you suddenly realise that you are doing things that you no longer fully support. Stress narrows your view of the future. Through enthusiasm, thinking in terms of opportunities, difficulty saying no, working with a lot of passion, you sometimes lose your own way.

Do you, therefore, opt for instant gratification of "easy" projects or clients? Thinking back to what you want is an intensive exercise. Nevertheless, I notice that the implementation of those findings is the hardest part.  You are in a so-called transformation period. Why it is so difficult is because the day-to-day work, the operational tasks, usually take over.

Someone who helps you look to the future together. Gaining insights into your blind spots, discussing them, even in areas you didn't know you were standing still.  Where your long-term strategy aka late gratification has to stick in the back of your mind, it has to live there,... I get clients to keep repeating where they want to go. By communicating big goals correctly, you create your own support. Don't do it now just so you can do it later. Everyone should preach their mission and vision every day 😇. Otherwise you quickly fall back into old habits, into that instant gratification.

A strategy is not a plan

Rather, it is a framework for making decisions. A set of principles that can be applied as the situation evolves. Strategy is not about what you plan to do in the future, but about what you will do now to turn the future to your advantage. It is about looking to the future and what role you will play in a new, changing world.

With I support creatives, the unique view of creative freelancers and entrepreneurs is exactly the reason why I love working with them. When I notice how a visual summary of what has been in their heads for years can be achieved step by step, I know I have added something. The handles and steppingstones I provide during sessions, constructively reflecting on their business, is what they use after a project to go further on their own, in their own course.

Is I support creatives something for you? Time to ask for help to do a strategic exercise together and make sure it is applied.
